If you’re trying to time when to buy a new iPhone, September is increasingly seen as your best bet.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told investors Friday suppliers are getting orders for iPhone components months later than usual.

The iPhone 5 may have a larger screen and a new version of iOS. The new software is viewed as another possible reason for the product’s delay. Apple usually unveils its new handset in June or July. One item you shouldn’t expect to see in the next iPhone is support for 4G – that likely won’t appear in the iPhone until 2012.

Independent Apple analyst Andy Zaky, counter to others, believes a new iPhone will be released in June.

“Apple significantly increased its guidance for operating expenses this quarter. The only time we see Apple do this is when it expects heavy traffic to its retail segment or ahead of a big product launch like the iPhone,” Zaky wrote earlier this week.

Will the next Apple handset appear in June or September? The consensus seems to be later than earlier.
