Android Runs On The iPad And iPhone 4, But It’s Still Not Ready For Prime Time

If you’re so inclined and mad enough to try it, you can install Google’s Android operating system on your original iPhone, iPod Touch or iPhone 3Gwith a minimum of fuss, but later iPhones like the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, as well as the iPad? A much stickier wicket.

According to Nick Pack, the product leader of the iDroid Project, while progress is coming along, it’s not happening as quickly as they’d like.

Work on the A4 port started late last year, but progress was slow due to there being a lack of skilled developers on the team to work on it. In the recent few weeks, the port has accelerated drastically. The 3GS port was started a couple of months back but lessons learned from the A4 port helped to bring it inline quickly. Due to the nature of the project, it is completly impossible to estimate just how long these things take. This is mainly due to the sheer volume of reverse engineering that has to be done, but we are working with largely undocumented and uncommon hardware so it comes with the territory.

Pack estimates that the work done on the port so far is about 60% complete, so don’t give up hope: given how bad Android handset makers have been updating their own devices, you might still very well be running the latest version of Android on your iPad sooner than many legitimate Android device owners no matter how long Pack and his team takes.
