Apple TV Update Boxes Out Boxee Users

appletvmenu_w_boxeeAnother Apple TV update has disabled the popular free media-streaming Boxee software. The side-effect of the Apple TV 2.3.1 update was reportedly unintentional on Apple’s part.

Although the specific conflict is yet unknown, Apple sent the update last night to all Apple TV owners. One potential solution is to disable automatic updates.

This isn’t the first time an update of Apple’s increasingly-popular device which streams video and photos from your computer to your TV has caused problems for Boxee fans.

In late 2008, Boxee developers released a fix when Apple distributed the Apple TV 2.3 update.

Boxee, which had gained popularity, recently suffered a set-back after Internet TV service Hulu axed a distribution agreement. Hulu said it took the action after several partner requests.

although in this case I couldn’t blame them. hulu and the like would cut into itunes sales. so I wouldn’t be shocked if they took an ‘oh well’ attitude about preventing issues with such hacks. though I doubt they would waste the time to figure out the hack and break it.

now if they would actually do this rumored ‘replay’ service and take on the cable companies.

we only bought the apple tv because the boxee hack was available. we get some shows from itunes and others via boxee and hulu. this will only hurt apple tv.

It’s true – without boxee, ATV is pretty lackluster (can’t do much with it – has its hands tied). Can’t play many video formats (pain) and you can’t surf the web (stream Shoutcast or NPR for example). The hulu axe was a HUGE disappointment…
