WhatsApp on Mac now has the ability to make and receive voice and video calls. It’s ideal for keeping in touch with friends, family, and colleagues from your desk while you can’t see them face to face.

Here’s how to initiate a voice or video call yourself.

If you’re unable to see loved ones right now, as many of us are, then hearing their voice or seeing their face — albeit behind a screen — is hugely important. It’s a lot better than exchanging lifeless texts.

So the ability to enjoy WhatsApp calls on your Mac couldn’t have come at a better time. The feature is really easy to use and it works cross-platform, so you can call others on iPhone, Android, and even Windows.

We’ll show you how to get started.

Making voice and video calls with WhatsApp on Mac

The first thing you’ll need to do is ensure that latest version of WhatsApp is downloaded and installed on your Mac. Your machine will need to be running macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later to be compatible.

You will also need a setup with voice and video calling capabilities. If you’re using a MacBook or iMac then you’re already good to go. But those with a Mac mini or Mac Pro will need a webcam and microphone.

When you’re ready, you can start a voice or video call by opening WhatsApp and following these steps:

  1. Click on a conversation with the person you would like to call. Or start a new one by clicking the compose button at the top of the WhatsApp window, and then choosing a contact.
  2. Click either the voice call or video call buttons at the top-right of the WhatsApp window to start your call.

If you begin a voice call and want to switch to a video call, simply click the camera button while the call is active. During your call, you have the ability to mute your microphone and disable your camera if necessary.

Group calls not supported

Sadly, WhatsApp for Mac and Windows, unlike their mobile counterparts, do not currently support group calls. So you can only partake in one-on-one voice and video conversations for now.

WhatsApp has promised, however, that support for group calls is coming to Mac and Windows later on. We’ll keep you updated on its rollout.
