Apple TV+ ordered its first competition series. My Kind of Country will feature “unconventional and extraordinary country music talent.”

The show hopes to revolutionize the music competition genre.

My Kind of Country won’t be American Idol for rednecks

My Kind of Country will have more of documentary feel than its predecessors. And the plan is to bring in more than the usual range of singers. The series will “break down cultural and musical barriers in the country music space, inviting innovative musicians to unleash their authentic voices and take center stage,” according to Apple.

Among the production companies will be Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, which also helps make The Morning Show for Apple TV+. The series’ will be executive produced by Done + Dusted, which in the past handled “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,” “iHeartRadio Music Awards” and many more.

The musical director will be Adam Blackstone, currently the musical director for Nicki Minaj and Justin Timberlake.

My Kind of Country will premiere globally on Apple TV+. When is not yet known.

Please stay tuned…

In recent months, Apple has been aggressively making deals to grow the library of content that will eventually be available on its streaming service. As just a few examples among many, Cupertino  just bought to rights to a spy/romance staring Idris Elba, and is producing Martin Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. In the near future, the neo-noir thriller Losing Alice and the espionage thriller Tehran will launch on the service.

But, so far, the Mac-maker has not shown any interest in buying the existing library of a movie studio. Instead, it’s apparently determined to produce all its movies and shows itself. This is a strategy that is leaving Apple TV+ struggling a bit to find an audience.
