TJ Maxx Selling iPads For $399 [Updated]

Deals on Apple products tend to be depressingly meager when you’re buying new, as I discovered yesterday when I did some price comparisons on the new 11.6-inch MacBook Air, only to discover the most aggressive deal I could find on the laptop was a whole five dollars off the retail price. Yet that’s all too typical: Apple products tend not to dip dramatically lower than their MSRP unless they are either refurbished or subsidized by a carrier.

Consider our jaws dropped, then, by the biggest deal on a current-gen Apple product we’ve ever seen. TJ Maxx — TJ Maxx, of all places! — is offering the iPad in at least some stores for a cool benjamin off the regular price.

That’s right, it appears that TJ Maxx will be selling the 16GB iPad WiFi version for just $399 in the lead up to Black Friday. Engadget reports that one reader saw the above sign at a TJ Maxx location in Vernon, New York, and readers have also reported finding the same offer in some other TJ Maxx locations, although the retail employees at those stores said the iPads will be holding their stock back for Black Friday.

If that price is right, and if TJ Maxx’s supply is anything less than extensive, than expect blood running down the gutters outside of your local strip mall on Black Friday.

Update: TJ Maxx confirms, saying they’ll be for sale in random, unadvertised stores starting Black Friday. Also, Marshall’s also apparently is part of this deal.
