Even if Glassgate turns out to be much ado about nothing, the iPhone 4 is a fragile little phone, despite its Gorilla Glass plated front: according to a study by third-party warranty company SquareTrade, the iPhone 4 is the most fragile smartphone that is.

The study was conducted over 50,000 different smartphones tracked for one year for both accidental breakage like drops or spills, as well as device failures unrelated to user negligence.

Overall, the iPhone 4 broke for 13.8% of all owners, compared to the iPhone 3GS’s accidental breakage rate of just 9.4%. Android handsets by Motorola and HTC were almost as fragile at 12.2% while Blackberries proved most resilient to mishandling with only a 6.7% accident rate.

The good news? The iPhone 4 is actually the least likely of all the handsets that SquareTrade survey to break on their own, so the construction and manufacturing of Apple’s latest and greatest phone is very solid… as long as you can manage to keep the thing from flying out of your hands and onto the concrete or into the toilet.
