Apple’s Fifth Avenue Apple Store refurb has being going on since 2017 — and it looks like it’ll be worth the wait.

According to new images, the iconic glass cube is getting a slightly psychedelic upgrade, with an iridescent coating that reflects every color under the sun. It’s a neat, attention-grabbing nod to the classic Apple rainbow logo which disappeared 20 years ago last month.

The 32-foot glass cube is probably the most famous Apple Store exterior in the world. It leads to an underground Apple Store, which is reportedly being expanded during the renovation. Originally 32,000 square feet, the Fifth Avenue store could measure as large as 77,000 square feet when all is said and done.

Fifth Avenue: Apple’s most iconic store

Apple first unveiled its Fifth Avenue Apple Store in May 2006. Although Steve Jobs had been heavily involved with every Apple Store thus far, this one was special for him. “It was really Steve’s store,” is how Ron Johnson, Apple’s former senior vice president of retail, described it.

The store closed in 2017 for a refurb. Angela Ahrents, Apple’s then-retail boss, said that the store would open by the end of 2018. Apple missed that date, but it looks like the time hasn’t been wasted. While we’ve yet to see the much-larger underground interior, the rainbow outer shell looks amazing.

It’s not yet clear exactly when Apple will reopen the store, but it seems like it’s not too far off. That should be exciting to Apple fans everywhere.
