Hello I’m a Mac (but I use a PC)

Hello I’m a Mac (but I use a PC)

Well it didn’t take long after his Apple gig ended for Justin Long to switch to the Dark Side. Known for his portrayal of “Mac” along with John Hodgman as “PC” in Apple’s very popular “Get a Mac” ad campaign, Long is seen using (of all things) a Dell laptop in a promo shot for his new film Going the Distance.  We presume he’s calling his old pal PC for tech support in this photo.

First a jailbroken iPhone, now using a PC.  Justin, Justin, how did things get so bad so fast?

Maybe it’s a Hackintosh. My Dell mini is.

this isnt a story the equipment used in the movie has nothing to do with him, hes just actor not a writer or set designer.

I’m sure glad you guys are only publishing the hardest hitting of news.

    • http://www.oakbog.com Adam Rosen

Adam – Happy to oblige, we aim to please! ;)

  • Conrad

I suppose some folks don’t get the joke. That’s cool.

  • Allan

Looks as though Dell outbid Apple for that little product placement.

  • Curtis

C’mon, No one is going to see this movie anyways.

  • vishnu

Is that like a 19″ notebook (or even bigger). It perhaps is a 17″ cher, but sure does look bigger than that in the pic. Gotta explain the PC.

Or this must be Justin’s “5-min of fame” to promote his new gig. Gotta get noticed, don’t he.

  • Guy

Remember it is just a movie and Justin Long is an actor. In some movies guys kiss other guys etc. Remember Brokeback Mountain.

It is a credit to him to be able to make it look like the PC is actually working instead of downloading security updates and stuff.

who cares. i always thought he was a bad actor

  • http://tekunoloji.com Ballmer Schmidt Jobs

I guess Apple didn’t give him any MacBooks at all during his time acting in those commercials.

One thing to understand is that many props in movies are plastic-not real. This might be one of those. Getting plastic Mac might have cost more than a plastic Dell. It’s business and budgeting.

  • kelly

I guess nobody considers it’s probably due to the director or movie set / roll props…. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t use a Mac at home for his personal use. I am pretty sure he does. I think he’s mentioned it before.

  • andrew

i just saw the movie, he uses an iMac at his “job”

  • Dimitrie

He’s an actor. He’ll do what he’s paid to do lol

  • Will

I agree that this is a non-story. It is great trivia which is to say that it is trivial at best.

  • Johnny Rocket

It’s called Product Placement. One of the many elements of film and television to generate additional revenue for the producers. Differs from endorsement.

Next time an actor in a film reaches for a bottle of soda or beer, notice that the label is almost always quite viewable for the audience.

BTW, years ago some tennis players were under contract to only use a particular brand of racket in Europe and Australia. They were also under contract to use a competing brand in the US. Since a racket (or racquet) is an essential piece of equipment to players of this calibre, many got around this contractual requirement by having their preferred brand painted so that it looked like the brand under endorsement in that locale.

Lighten up folks. I love the commercials and I think Justin did an excellent job. I’m sure that Justin saw the irony in this as soon as he saw the laptop. He did a great job in communicating the personality that we Mac users apply to our computers.

  • JVC

I think Johnny Rocket is right. For the naive forks, this is 100% product placement. You would never see any brand names on any U.S. movies nowadays (unless it is independent movie, but even many independent movies get PP), unless it is paid for.
If this movie was on Walt Disney (it is Warner Brothers), we would’ve seen him using MacBook, instead of Dell.

    • http://www.oakbog.com Adam Rosen

I think this product placement is a wink by both Justin and Dell, it’ll get laughs from the audience. May as well play on typecasting recognition when you can. (See also: I am not Spock and I am Spock.)

  • 4phun

You should have seen the look of shock on Justin’s face when one of the crew members walked by and his foot snagged the power cord seen in that photo. That simple error yanked that Dell of the table and smashed it to the floor of the set ruining yet another PC laptop.

That would have never happened with a Mac Book’s superior design as everyone knows.

  • alexis

stupid story…no actor gets to choose his set

    thanks

  • morgan

wow this isnt even news, who really cares is a movie being made has a laptop in it.

  • Cult_of Reason

Wow does anyone see this is product placement and has nothing to do with what Justin likes at all? Its funny how everyone is trying to put him down, calling him a crappy actor and saying his 15 mins are up. Didn’t you guys know he’s an actor and was in movies before the Mac ads? Wait this came from Macworld.com? Wow I’m starting to think this is a real fucking cult. Get a fucking life, you guys love Steve Jobs as much as Cartmen loves Mel Gibson and at the end of the day he’s just gonna shit on you.

By the way Justin Long is way cooler then “Adam Rosen”
Why would this be under “News” what is so news worthy about?
