Beta Testers Report iPhone 3G Speed Improvements with iOS 4.1

Beta Testers Report iPhone 3G Speed Improvements with iOS .jpgThe light at the end of the tunnel seems to be glowing ever brighter for iPhone 3G owners running iOS 4.  In addition to Steve Jobs’ recently publicized email claiming a software update coming soon to fix the problems, the Blogosphere and Twitter are also carrying reports of big performance improvements with recent betas:

Tests with a beta version of Apple’s iOS 4.1 on a well-used 3G suggest that the new OS has increased the phone’s responsiveness. Indeed, apps load much more quickly, text entry is much smoother and the phone no longer slows down beyond the point of usability when more than one browser window is open. These have been among the most widely reported problems.

Tests conducted with the new beta version of iOS4.1 reveal that the phone’s responsiveness has actually improved! Apps can be downloaded faster, text can be entered more smoothly and the phone does not slow down when you open multiple browser windows. [Blogote]

Apple’s upcoming Media Event scheduled for early September would be a logical time to release this upgrade; some blogs are even reporting that it may come as soon as this week.

Several posts on Twitter also mention improvements:

jasondelacruz: I heard from a beta tester today that iOS 4.1 brings a huge performance improvement for iPhone 3g. Hang tight.

machelpblog: Beat [sic] testing iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 3G has been a great speed improvement. #iphone Thank you Apple!!!!

Assuming the fix is finally arriving, the next question to ask (and indeed posed by many people) is why didn’t Apple discover this behavior before the release of iOS4?  Presumably iPhone 3G performance was tested under the new OS, enough to know which features to disable outright such as multitasking and background wallpaper.  The day to day problems become apparent very quickly after installation.

I don’t believe this was a deliberate attempt by Apple to get people to upgrade from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4  (however tempting that might be to entertain).  I think instead it was low priority for the engineering teams, who were working on a tight schedule to get iOS4 ready for an accelerated launch after the Gizmodo Saga.  Perhaps supporting the 3G at all was a last minute decision, one not desired by the company but a compromise made since this model was still selling as the low end option right up until the 4”s debut?

Whatever the reason, Apple dropped the ball.  It’s time to resume gameplay.

Sounds good. Let’s hope the same thing does not happen again with 3gs or iphone 4 when they are near the end.

    Great Job Apple! d|^_^d|

What is being indicated for all the other problems with i OS 4 on the 3G iPhone, such as: spontaneous hard resets, screen freezing, Javascript malfunction, high battery consumption, re-fetching of read emails as new emails (even when deleted), crashing of the ‘settings’ app?

‘Speed’ is only one of the problems.

  • GoGo Bears

What about the damn proximity sensor issues on iPhone 4 – it’s about time apple made it possible to reliably use the iPhone 4 as a …wait for it… PHONE!!!

Apple has been totally shameless and disingenuous with the iPhone 4 which is STILL an immature, improperly developed and tested, and (without the appropriate fixes) fatally flawed product.

I ‘ve bought apple for years – NEVER AGAIN!

  • Marcus

Get over it … You’re going to let a proximity sensor issue keep you from buying apple products once again I said this to someone about the deathgrip.. Had the phone since day one and have not had one problem. It’s is bar far the best “phone” on the market. Quit your crying or return your phone … It will be fixed when they make a fix.. These things don’t happen over night

  • Elorea

@ Marcus. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m about sick of the haters complaining and doing nothing about it. If the phone is that much of a problem for you, return it and leave us he heck alone.

@ GoGo Bears, well actually apple have said IOS 4.1 wil lfix proximity problems with the Iphone 4, as well as fixing the speed and possibly battery problems with the Iphone 3g. Next time i suggest you should do some research into IOS 4.1 for your Iphone 4 as there are many source that say that the issue has been delt with and currently they are holding back the release due to the high memory leak that has appeard in Beta 3 but apart from that speed improvements have been made and that issue has been fixed. Not everything is perfect look at windows !!

I bought a used 3G from a friend who went and got himself the iphone 4. Since I “upgraded” my 3G to 4.0.2 my wifi became completely disabled (apparently lots of people have had this problem from what I’ve read). Will 4.1 restore my wifi???

  • Jeff

Well, 4.1 is here but my Wifi aint (since os3)….Apple corp’s excuse: cant respond now as NO repair issues have surfaced involving this issue, buy another phone to replace it.

?!?!?!?!?!?! Their choice to upgrade the OS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE an unexpected expense on my part!!
