No Jailbreak Tethering Available Now — If You’re a Developer

We all gave up the ability to jailbreak and tether our iPhones when we updated them to iOS 4 or purchased an iPhone 4. Hackers have been teasing us that an iOS 4 jailbreak is imminent, but now you don’t have to wait for them or the jailbreak to have tethering again. You can have tethering on your iPhone now — using an open source project hosted on GitHub called iProxy.

The only caveat is that this isn’t an easy one click solution. It is a fairly complicated one, since you will need to have or have access to a paid Apple iOS developers account so you can sign and build apps to install on an iPhone belonging to you or someone else.  Developers can grab the latest copy of the iProxy source code via this tar-ball link or they can visit the iProxy project website http://wiki.github.com/tcurdt/iProxy/. Download, build, and install it on your iPhone.

Next you will find complete step-by-step instructions on the Mac OS X and iPhone setup requirements at Configuring iProxy to tether your computer to the iPhone via Wi-Fi for immediate internet access for your Macbook, iMac, etc.

Unfortunately, due to the complicated nature and variables involved in iOS app deployment I won’t be able to tell you step-by-step how to perform the build and install procedures in Xcode. If you need help there you should ask one of your developer friends for assistance. If you are a software developer, but don’t have a paid Apple iOS developer account then this might be your incentive to become one today. Paying $100 for a developer account will pay for itself in only five months if you already have an unlimited data plan on your iPhone and you are unhappy that AT&T doesn’t offer you the $20 tethering plan (check your carrier Terms of Service to see if using iProxy is okay or not). If you split the $100 between five or more friends the cost per person is reduced and the return on the investment is even better. So what are you waiting for? Go to http://developer.apple.com/ and sign up now.

Unless hackers have been teasing you by using the wrong word, you mean “imminent” not “eminent.”

Only iPhone 4 is yet to be jailbroken, there has been jailbreak since day one through dev-teams Pwanage Tool for your iPhone 3GS or 3G (previously jailbroken).
Also there is an excellent tethering through MyWi and it has too been updated to work with iOs4 for awhile now.

    Nice crash blossom headline….

Enabling tethering on the Iphone 4 is very possible and extremely easy if you are upgrading from a jailbroken Iphone 3g to the new Iphone 4. If you previously installed a carrier update to enable tethering on your jailbroken 3G, do a restone of your Iphone 4 using your 3G backup. I was running 3.1.2 IOS jailbroken with Geohot. When I got my Iphone 4 I did a restore from my old data and the tethering was enabled. I also tried to restore my fctory settings and it immediately disabled my Tethering settings.

A few years ago there was (very briefly) an app called NetShare in the App Store which used this same method, a WiFi connection via a SOCKS proxy to enable tethering. It worked, but was difficult to setup and a pain in the ass to enable each time. Apple pulled it within hours…

Signing up isn’t that easy. You need to have a named company.

  • Ian

I didn’t have to have a named company when I signed up. Try making something up if it won’t let you in.

Ian: I don’t understand the comment about needing to have a named company. Many thousands of individuals are iOS app developers. Those developers often started out on their own and a later after some success formed companies. If you think you need to have a company name either make one up or in the US we can create a DBA – Doing Business As…I have one of these for my ventures. I’m not sure if you are in the US or not, but hopefully these ideas will help. – DM

If you intend to share a developer account as the article suggest, you will need proof of a company or organization. Signing up as an individual is simpler, but leaves you the bill.
