Adding wireless charging to your AirPods will cost $69

Apple’s new Wireless Charging Case for AirPods will go on sale this December, according to a report out of Europe, which sites Apple Switzerland. The device is expected to cost $69, which is the same amount you’ll pay to replace a standard case if you lose it.

That might sound like a good deal, but it’s not. It’s a terrible deal, and it’s further evidence that Apple’s prices are getting out of hand. Here’s why.

AirPods cost $159, and come with a standard case that requires a Lightning cable for charging. As things stand, Apple reportedly has no plans to sell AirPods with the Wireless Charging Case, so it will be available as an optional accessory.

That means that if you want AirPods that charge wirelessly, you’ll have to cough up $159 for the earphones themselves, which some might say are already overpriced — plus an additional $69 for the Wireless Charging Case. That takes the total cost to $228.

I don’t care who you are, that’s a lot to pay for wireless earphones — especially when you consider you can get an Apple Watch Series, which comes with a wireless charger by default, for an additional $20.

It wouldn’t be so bad if you could get the case cheaper by buying it with AirPods, but you’re forced to buy AirPods at full price and the case separately. And it seems crazy to pay $69 for what is essentially a piece of plastic with a charging coil in it.

Will you be getting one?
