Ghouls’n Ghosts may have first landed in video arcades almost 30 years ago in 1988, but it’s finally arrived on iOS — opening it up for both a whole new generation of gamers, and anyone wanting to get a quick nostalgia boost on their commute to work.

For those who have never played it before, the game is a side-scrolling Capcom platformer in which you take control of the knight Arthur, with the mission of hacking and slashing your way through hordes of demons and the undead. Needless to say, it’s a whole lot of ghoulish fun — which is why it’s stuck around for as long as it has.

Ghouls’n Ghosts is the last of four classic Capcom games to launch on iOS this year. Previous installments include 1942, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando, and the similarly-titled Ghosts’n Goblins.

Remarkably, Ghouls’n Ghosts remains as much fun as it was back in the stick-floored arcades of the late 80s, although some players will doubtless be slightly put off by the presence of virtual controls to play. (Sadly there’s no third-party controller support.)

On the plus side, there are some nice slight modifications, such as the ability to either have the game play in its original windowed aspect ratio, or stretched to fill the entire screen.

If you’ve not played before — or if you have, but fancy revisiting your misspent youth — Ghouls’n Ghosts is definitely a lot of fun. Especially for 99 cents, which is less than you’d pump into the arcade game for a few turns back in 1988.
