Looking to get up to speed on the week’s hottest apps? We’ve got your back!

This week’s “Awesome Apps” installment is a game-heavy edition, ranging from a great viking-themed adventure game to a beloved Mac classic going free. Check out our picks below. You won’t regret it.

Die With Glory

One of the best things about writing the weekly “Awesome Apps” roundup is getting a chance to help spread the word about original innovative iOS games that you might otherwise not get the chance to play.

Die With Glory is one such game. It’s an epic adventure game where the goal is to, well, do what the title says. You play as Sigurd, an old viking warrior who must journey through multiple levels to find the afterlife in Valhalla. Describing it like this doesn’t do it justice, but this is a fun, varied independent game boasting 6 levels of varied action — from surfing a lava river to besieging and defending castles.

Highly recommended!

StarCraft

StarCraft was an absolute phenomenon when it launched.

Sometimes I’ll feature older apps in this roundup, on the condition that something has made them noteworthy in the past week. That hold true for incredibly popular real-time strategy game StarCraft, which first launched way back in 1998.

This week the title went free to Mac users, including its Brood War expansion pack. If you haven’t played StarCraft in years — or *gasp* have never played it at all — this is a great opportunity to go revisit a genuine classic.

(The reason it’s free, if you’re interested, is because developers Blizzard are releasing a Remastered edition later this year, and no doubt hope that this will serve as an appealing appetizer!)

Family Guy: Another Freakin’ Mobile Game

The last Family Guy game on iOS, The Quest for Stuffwas actually surprisingly good — with a city-building concept that making for enjoyable and addictive gameplay.

The tongue-in-checkily titled Another Freakin’ Mobile Game isn’t as good, but if you’re a Family Guy fan, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. It’s a matching game, but one that includes plenty of entertaining references to Family Guy‘s screen history.

Apple this week teamed up with Musical.ly, a popular music-themed app for video creation, messaging and live broadcasting. As part of the deal, Apple became a supplier of songs for the app — with Apple Music subscribers able to listen to full songs, while non-subscribers can get brief clips.

Musical.ly is an incredibly popular lip-synching app, that’s sure to appeal to any fans of shows like Lip Sync Battle. It’s predominantly aimed at younger tween and teen audiences, but adults can get plenty of fun out of it, too.

Although the app’s not new, this week’s Apple update made it worth including — while it also received a bug fix.
