Lara Croft is back with major Tomb Raider GO update

Back in 2015, Square Enix Montreal released Tomb Raider GO, an audacious attempt to reimagine the Lara Croft franchise by turning it into a fun, turn-based isometric puzzle game.

By all rights, it totally shouldn’t have worked, but it did — and the results were excellent. Now the game has been given an overhaul with new levels, courtesy of the Mirror of Spirits update.

Check out the trailer below.

The new levels arrived on PlayStation and PC a few months back, although this marks their debut on iOS. You get 25 new levels, with the new puzzles (which include a “mirrored” Lara, as the title hints at), which serve as a worthy successor to the brilliant original.

If you’ve never played Tomb Raider GO (or the excellent Hitman GO), the switch in genres will take you slightly by surprise, but in this case it perfectly captures what was so fun about the original series.

You move Lara around by swiping the screen to move her on a space, a little bit like a board game. You then have to flip switches, pick up items, make jumps, avoid taps and kill beasties, just as in the 3D version of the game — only with a little more strategy.

I’ve not yet had the chance to fully play through the new Mirror of Spirits levels, but hopefully I’ll have done so by the time I write up this week’s “Awesome apps of the week” round-up on Sunday. For $1.99, you really can’t go wrong…
