Despite clashing with Apple multiple times, and even calling for a boycott of its devices, President Donald Trump has reportedly been using a new iPhone “for the past couple of weeks” on Twitter.
The news was revealed in a tweet (how else?) by Dan Scavino Jr., Trump’s director of social media.
Trump using an iPhone would stand in stark contrast to his predecessor, notable Apple fan Barack Obama. Although Obama did occasionally tweet from an iPhone, he wasn’t actually allowed to use one while in office due to fears about wiretapping.
“I’m not allowed for security reasons to have an iPhone,” Obama admitted on one occasion.
Earlier this year, Trump reportedly surrendered his Android smartphone for similar reasons. He got issued a “secure, encrypted device approved by the Secret Service,” alongside a new phone number that only a few people will posses.
It’s fair to say that Trump “enjoys” something of a mixed relationship with Apple.
During last year’s security standoff with the FBI, Trump slammed Apple for not aiding in the fight against terrorism by creating a backdoor for accessing iOS devices. Trump even went so far as to call for a boycott of iPhones if Apple didn’t back down.
More recently, Trump criticized Apple’s decision to produce devices overseas rather than in the United States.
In his capacity as a private citizen, Apple CEO Tim Cook supported Hillary Clinton. (He even got considered as a possible running mate for the Democrat presidential nominee.
Apple also opposed Trump’s controversial travel ban along with other big tech companies.
