Louis Vuitton’s new iPhone case is super-expensive, just as ugly

When you spend $700 on an iPhone, the last thing you should do is rely on a $5 case to protect it. Instead, let Louis Vuitton coat it in clunky metal and crocodile skin so you never have to worry about scratches and shattered screens.

Just try to ignore the fact that the case is super-expensive — and just as ugly.

Available exclusively for the iPhone 7 Plus, the Eye-Trunk case was designed to pay tribute to Louis Vuitton’s origins as a trunk designer. It’s more than just a case, the company says. It’s “the ultimate fashionable accessory of the season.”

The Eye-Trunk is made out of genuine crocodile leather with a microfiber lining. A metal surround with reinforced corners ensures the case is incredibly sturdy, and protects your iPhone from impact should you drop it. But it won’t be the iPhone you’ll worry about breaking.

At $5,500, the Eye-Trunk is considerably more expensive than any iPhone (or Mac, for that matter). It might keep your smartphone safe, but you’ll need a case for your case to ensure your $5,500 purchase doesn’t get ruined in your bag.

Louis Vuitton does offer some more affordable Eye-Trunk options if crocodile skin is out of your price range. The canvas model, which carries the famous LV monogram and comes in three different colors, costs $1,250. Alternatively, a folio for iPhone 6 runs just $295.
