Facebook is making big changes to the way it approaches video. Videos in the Facebook News Feed previously played silently unless users turned sound on. Now if you want to keep the sound off, you’ll need to dig through your Facebook settings.

Turn off the annoying new feature with these steps.

Turn off audio in Facebook News Feed videos

  • Log into your Facebook account.
  • Go to Settings by clicking the down arrow in the upper-right corner.
  • Navigate to the Videos section.
  • Click Off under the option Videos in News Feed Start with Sound.

With the setting disabled, you will still be able to hear sound by tapping on the video. All videos now autoplay with audio on by default, and the sound fades in and out as you scroll through videos in your feed.

You can also keep videos silent by setting your iPhone to silent, just like with Instagram.

Facebook’s new video features

The new autoplay video with audio feature is set to roll out to all Facebook users soon. You might not see the option to turn it off quite yet.

That’s not the only change to how Facebook is handling video. The company also revealed today that it is taking on YouTube with an Apple TV app that will serve up Facebook videos on the large screen. Facebook is also embracing vertical videos.
