For whatever reason, I’ve been playing a ton of iOS games this past week, so with that in mind I decided to focus on games for this week’s “Awesome Apps” instalment.

Whether you’re looking for something quick and easy to while away your Sunday, or a far more in-depth gaming experience that’ll keep you busy until the bad weather ends, I’m confident you’ll find something on this list to enjoy.

Check it out:

Breakout Ninja

I wrote about Breakout Ninja during the week, including an interview with its creator, but it’s so good I wanted to highlight it again in my end-of-week app roundup.

With beautifully simple gameplay mechanics, Breakout Ninja is an auto-runner in which you guide a ninja protagonist across the screen. As you do, you have to tap on circles to prompt certain actions, such as kicking an enemy, leaping a fence, or smashing through a guard tower.

It’s a lot of fun, with great stylized graphics from one of the lead artists behind Angry Birds. I don’t think its creator would take offence at my saying that this game probably won’t last you too long, but it’s a lot of fun while you’re playing it. And at this price point, who can argue with that?

Sonny

A popular duo of Flash games which have been around for aeons, Sonny has finally made its way to iOS with a new title bringing the combat-based RPG to a whole new audience.

The backstory of the game involves a character (the eponymous Sonny) who wakes up on board a ship besieged by zombies, and with no idea of who he is, what’s going on — or why he appears to be a zombie himself.

It’s a lot of fun, very stylish, and well worth a play — regardless of whether you’re a series newbie or a long-time fan.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The second of two former Flash games this week, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a popular roguelike shooter that previously arrived on Macs, PCs and consoles in 2014.

The game is absolutely massive, with upwards of 500 hours of gameplay, taking the form of a top-down 2D dungeon crawler game full of monsters to be battled and power-ups to be collected.

It’s great — albeit dark — stuff, but highly recommended if the concept appeals to you. Slightly steep price tag, mind!

Alpha Swipe

A frantic word game!

I first heard about Alpha Swipe over on AppAdvice, and have been very much enjoying it. Like the world’s fastest game of Scrabble, it’s a puzzle game in which you have to create as many words as you can before the time runs out.

To do this, tap on letters as they appear on screen to start building words with 3 or more letters. The longer the word, the more points and extra time you earn. It’s fun stuff, and promises to keep your mind engaged on your commute to or from the office.
