APP OF THE WEEK
Labyrinth 2 HD: Fantastic tilt-based marble-in-maze game with bonkers courses and fab aesthetics. 5/5 $7.99 https://bit.ly/9JAQKR
Baseball Fever HD: A great game if you hate baseball – and yourself. Avoid. 1/5 Free https://bit.ly/9RpTi2
Blackjack Free HD: Tolerable if ugly blackjack with nails-down-chalkboard audio. 2/5 Free https://bit.ly/crWEZR
Break HD: Mediocre Breakout game, seemingly wrenched screaming from early ’90s Amiga public domain disk 2/5 Free https://bit.ly/cWFbUj
Cliffed: Norm’s World XL: Rush-to-bottom vertical platformer. Lacks depth (oho!), but good controls/visuals. 3/5 Free https://bit.ly/9PQU1X
Compression HD: Puyo Puyo in a trash compactor. Like the decent iPhone game, but larger and free. 3/5 Free https://bit.ly/bNTz0t
JamPad: Drum loops? Check! Mixer? Check! Piano keyboard that slides on drag & can’t be locked? Ch- *WHAT?* 1/5 Free https://bit.ly/avw4zj
Labyrinth 2 HD Lite: 15 levels from the tactile, fun, great-looking tilt-based maze game. 3/5 Free https://bit.ly/dr05BT
Paper Football HD: Like Paper Football HD Premium, but with ads that regularly crash the app. Rubbish. 1/5 Free https://bit.ly/azkoVe
Paper Football HD Premium: Truly awful flick-based paper football with added awful sauce. 1/5 Free https://bit.ly/ap0sGY
Pukk HD: Pong with lip-gloss on. OK w/ two players but the most pointless single-player game imaginable 2/5 Free https://bit.ly/bTRCnu
Sir Revs-a-Lot HD: Poor update of iPhone IndestructoTank clone, hampered by acres of space between foes 2/5 Free https://bit.ly/bbIuSg
Tangle Plus Lite: Island-connect game. Fun until completed – after about 5 mins. Good ad for full game, tho’. 2/5 Free https://bit.ly/cOGCX4
Tap Blaster HD: Pong with multiple projectiles. Has potential, but currently silent & feels unfinished. 2/5 Free https://bit.ly/cNRVpq
WeatherBug Elite for iPad: Feature-packed, good-looking weather app – for USA. If elsewhere, drop rating by 2. 4/5 Free https://bit.ly/cQZ4Sd
It’s early days for the iPad, but it’s clear quality at the free end of the scale is pretty woeful and far worse than for iPhone. However, the best the iPad has to offer often outshines similar titles for iPhone. A case in point is this week’s top app, Labyrinth 2 HD. The tilt-based marble maze worked nicely on iPhone, but feels right at home on iPad, with the larger device affording more precision movement, better graphics and a more immersive experience.
