Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones have barely made it into the wild, but early reports of the devices exploding in customers’ homes may have caused the company to delay shipments.
In a statement to news outlets today, Samsung said it delayed shipments to do product-quality tests, however, local reports from South Korea reveal the company may be investigating whether the device is prone to spontaneously burst into flames.
“Shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 are being delayed due to additional tests being conducted for product quality,” Samsung said, declining to elaborate what it is testing and what markets are delayed.
Last week a Galaxy Note 7 owner posted pictures of the device after it exploded while charging. The device was supposedly connected to a microUSB to USB Type-C converter so it could have been caused by a third-party accessory.

Another Galaxy Note 7 owner in South Korea experienced the same thing a few days later when her device exploded while charging at night. “I woke up by the bang and the smell of smoke,” she told followers on social media.
Samsung’s rival Apple certainly knows what its like to deal with exploding iPhone controversies, but it has never caused a delay in shipments or even admitted any fault.
With the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus being unveiled in less than two weeks, this a really bad time for Samsung to run into problems.
