Relive 5 Years of “Get A Mac” in Five Minutes

Having long hated Apple’s Get a Mac campaign, I was surprised to find myself getting sentimental as I watched this three-minute tribute to the whole Mac vs. PC saga, as put together by OneMoreThing. Minimize Justin Long’s lugubrious smarm and what you’re left with is the core strength of the campaign anyway: John Hodgman’s consistently winsome and hysterical performance as the PC. That core strength, though, always seemed directly opposed to the message: PCs suck. It’s just so hard to hate PCs when their avatar is this awesome. Either way, it’s nice to see Hodgman get one last hurrah: this is a man who earned his paycheck for the last five years. Hurrah!

These ads were funny and actually quite accurate when they criticized Vista, the sad state of tech support, and XP. I personally think that the reason Apple discontinued the series, however, is that Windows 7 is too good to poke fun at. Hard as it may be to admit (and disappointing that it took Microsoft so many years to achieve), Windows 7 actually gets close to the quality of Mac OS X, so….no ad fodder.

    2006-2009 doesn’t seem like 5 years to me …

It could be “4 years in 4 minutes” since the video was 3:45

I loved these ads, they are dead on correct. Why would anyone choose a PC? Really? And yes, Windoze Seven is finally out, and the ads have run their course, there is no need to push on with the SAME ads. The fact that Win7 is ‘better than Vista’ is a good rationale to cling to as you realize your investment in all things Windoze is not a total loss, but it’s no reason to stick with a dead end platform. As usual, it took MSFT a really long time to get relatively decent copy of the Mac experience, and you are still stuck with most of the crud and incompatibilities that have always been the hallmark of the PC.

Win7 has really picked up microsofts game, but the problems that bugged me with all MS operating systems are still there. Annoying patch messages. Reboots on my laptop that say don’t power off until I’m done, just as I am shutting down and need to go catch the bus, installing a webcam taking over 30 minutes to download it’s crappy control panel software etc. However I still have my pcs, but running Linux 8)

You are coming to a sad realization… cancel or allow?

I hate those ads, they are pretty much stupid and it stayed on so long.
Its true Win7 doesn’t suck any more, but its not as good as the mac experience. Every time I deal with a Windows pc, I regret touching, things are always over complexed

John Hodgman was definitely the life of these ads, his comic timing and deadpan style were perfect, even tho I didn’t really like the campaign either. They were funny tho, no doubt about that.
