“Get A Mac” Ad Campaign Over?

It looks like the final curtain has closed on Apple’s award-winning “Get a Mac” campaign launched in 2006.

Apple has pulled the ads from the company site, the page now redirects visitors to “Why You’ll Love a Mac.” (Nostalgics can still find them on YouTube, though.)

The last ones, released in October 2009, were surprisingly clever but Mac man Justin Long speculated in an interview last month that the ads had run their course:

What’s the status on those Apple commercials?

JL: You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John, I think they’re going to move on. I can’t say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John. I’ve become very close with him, and he’s one of my dearest, greatest friends. It was so much fun to go do that job, because there’s not a lot to it for me. A lot of it is just keeping myself entertained between takes, and there’s no one I’d rather do it with than John.

Are you sad or glad to see them go? Which one was your favorite?

I liked them all, and I’m a little sad.

I’m sad to see them go. I liked them all. But I think my favorite was the animated x-mas one :)

Yeah, why take them offline? :/

I’m very sad to see them go. I Tivo 99% of what I watch but always stopped to watch these, even when I’d already seen them. Fanboy yes, but very well done. I hope (and assume) they worked well for Apple.

These TBWA\Chiat\Day spots really differentiated the brand. As an advertising exec. I always admired their work for Apple. However I can’t understand why they chose to duplicate the iPhone ad’s for the iPad? Apple has always allowed great advertising but the new campaign lacks any creativity. Just a laundry list of what it can do.

Anyway, as for favorites, the one with the PC Security guy. The last line “You have come to a sad realization. Allow or Deny” Always makes me laugh.

They were effective. The were part of the reason Apple market share and sales surged in the last several years, to the detriment of Windows Vista.

Were they cheeky at times? Sure. But it was mostly tongue-in-cheek schoolboy humor. It was all harmless teasing, kinda like when a 4th-grader tells another 4th-grader my booger tastes better than YOUR booger.

Who cares how juvenile the humor was? What counts in the end is that the commercials translated into sales/revenue success.

Well, that stinks…I loved those ads. I’ve been a devoted Apple fan since I switched to Mac last year, and one of my favorite things to do was to hook up my MacBook Pro to the 42 inch in the living room and watch those ads when my wife’s sony viao would crash to piss her off. I’m sure they’re on YouTube somewhere, but it’s just not going to be the same.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Cody, do you love your wife? Good men don’t let their wives do Windows.

Why laugh at her frustration with her pathetic Vaio crashes? Just convert her already.

Would have been nice if they at least published the original music theme. There are many different versions available, but none of them come close.

    thank god its finally over…

I never liked them and thought they were stupid.
I was much more into the earlier apple ads
    like “Think Different”
    and 1984

but maybe this is for mainstream and non-technical people to get it through their heads

I liked them over all, and several of them were quite clever and marketing gold. However, it was time to move on. Ad campaigns have a limited life, and Microsoft absconded with the “I’m a PC” bit. Sure, we all know it was a lame attempt, but since they latched on to that, let them sink their money in repeating ad lines that are old and no longer interesting. Now that they are invested in it with Win7, release something new, hit them hard, and continue to plow away their market share.

All of them are great!!! …but my favourite one is the -pc/mac home movies!
