Original “Prince of Persia” Coming To The iPhone and iPad

The original Prince of Persia, first released for the Apple II back in 1989, is now coming to the iPhone according to Ubisoft’s website.

Called Prince of Persia Retro, there’s not many details available about the port, except that it will be a universary binary for the iPad and (obviously) support touch controls.

The plot is the same as it ever was:

A wicked Vizier has given the Sultan’s daughter a horrible ultimatum: accept to marry him in 60 minutes, or die. You have been imprisoned in the lowest dungeons beneath the palace, and must now race against the sands of the hourglass in an effort to save your true love. Negotiate fiendish traps, engage in trilling swordplay and use death-defying acrobatics to make your way through one of the most celebrated and influential video games of all time.

Curiously, the release date of Prince of Persia Retro is listed for April 29th, 2010. Since it’s not on the App Store yet, either Ubisoft intends on using the Sands of Time to retroactively release it, or you can expect it to be released on the weekend of the 28th, simultaneously with the upcoming Disney film.

I can’t wait. I’ve rarely spent as much time on a video game as I spent leaping the Prince across chasms and slashing scimitars on the old Mac OS port. Let’s hope this is a port Ubisoft does right.

I’ve been waiting for this game to be released on the iPod Touch for a very long time.

I’d love to see Karateka get a release as well. And if you rotate the Touch/Pad the wrong way, you get to play it upside down (like the easter egg of the original release…)

This was the first Mac game I ever bought. It came in a really cool box and I liked the way the Prince would slide to a stop or tip-toe.

Had this on my pc. Cool, now I have dragons lair, wolfenstien, snes emulator and prince is coming? It like I have a 386 in my pocket 8)

For some reason, I could never get past something like the third or fourth level – some jump I could never make or something. I’d kill for the original 2D Lemmings, or that game where you and some monster-thing work together to escape a building (came out in the mid 90′s, had very fluid 2D, kinda sidescrolling graphics – anyone remember it?)

I already bought it :) It is smooth.

@Dustin you mean Another World (Out of this world in the US). I’d also kill for it to come to the iPod Touch. Do you know it is available in a “revamped” version for WinXP? You can check http://www.anotherworld.com (if I remember correctly). Enjoy!
