Apple’s first iOS 10 beta has revealed that the company is secretly working on a new dark mode interface. It’s still in the early stages and not ready for primetime yet, but these gorgeous images imagine what it might look like when it’s ready.

It makes sense for Apple to give iOS users a dark mode. Not only is it easier on the eyes for some, but it’s also ideal for those OLED displays that are said to be coming to next year’s iPhone series because it won’t burn anywhere near as much power as today’s light interface.

The only way to access the dark mode hidden in the first iOS 10 beta is through the Xcode simulator, and it’s not really worth the effort right now because it’s nowhere near ready. But the concept images above and below give us a taste of what we have to look forward to.

We still don’t know if dark mode will make it into the final version of iOS 10. Although Apple’s working on it, it could be saved until those OLED displays arrive with next year’s iPhones. In the meantime, we’ll just have to keep drooling over concept images like these ones.
