Use Your Unlimited iPad Data Plan With Your iPhone

It’s common knowledge that plugging a regular SIM into the iPad is as simple as cleaving it down to microSIM dimensions… but what if you want to use the unlimited AT&T iPad data plan on your iPhone? Over at HiJinks Inc, they’ve posted a great guide to doing just that.

The first part’s pretty common sense: what you need to do is affix your iPad microSIM to a sturdy adapter cut from an old credit card or regular SIM card. Where it gets tricky is in telling the iPhone how to actually play nice with the new Frankenstein SIM: you need to change your iPhone’s APN settings to tell your phone how to communicate with the network.

It’s a great little hack to get an old iPhone running with unlimited data for the same price as the iPad’s monthly subscription fee. My hope, though, is that Apple will eventually make hacks like this unnecessary by allowing data-only microSIMs to be installed in their iPod Touch line. In fact, I think they probably will: it makes sense to treat the iPod Touch like a miniature iPad, and if Apple unveils streaming iTunes at WWDC, the iPod Touch will need some sort of cellular modem functionality to truly take advantage of the service.

For now, though, this hack does a similar trick, as long as you’ve got a spare iPhone lying around.
