Ellen DeGeneres Apologizes To Apple For Lame, Unfunny iPhone Parody Ad

In what might charitably be called the most toothless and limp parody this side of your dentureless grampa doing a timely Grover Cleveland impersonationation right before nap time, Ellen DeGeneres went on her talk show on Monday to poke fun at the iPhone 3Gs.

Ellen’s hilarious gag? When she wants to send a text message, she can’t do it through the “Maps” application. The punchline? The iPhone’s hard to use!

I know. Milquetoast crumbled up into comedic pablum, then defecated upon and labeled tiramisu.

While the execution was indisputably offensive to the entire platonic concept of humor, it’s hard to imagine a person who would actually be “offended” by the actual joke… but apparently, that person works at Apple, because Ellen followed the bit the next day with a formal apology for the gag, accompanied by a tortuous re-airing of the original bit which garnered even fewer forced laughs from the audience than it had the day before.

I’m not sure what’s more humorless here. Ellen, a professional comedian (who I actually like), puckering up and birthing the thin stream of odorless fart that became her “iPhone 3Gs” parody or the dessicated 394 year old grandmother working at Apple who decided to get the vapors when she smelled it.

Get over yourself. It was clean comedy and worth a few laughs. And this said from an Apple fan since the ’80s. Apple goes too far sometimes.

  • http://ihbs.co.uk Ben

I dont get the joke. So the phone she has, she finds difficult to use. Whats the joke?

  • Ed

Whether it was funny or not is irrelevant here, the pertinent point is how Apple reacted.

  • Sam

Yeah seriously, I found it funny. Build a bridge, lads.

  • Jon

I thought it was funny. It was parodying a “mom” trying to use a new high-tech device—the joke was the user, not the phone. Apple is lame for going after this. What about David Letterman introducing the iPad and constantly accidentally hitting the “lock” button before getting frustrated and putting it down. That’s the type of person this is making fun of, IMO.

While I agree with your basic point, a critique of the lameness of someone’s stab at comedy would carry more weight if it didn’t have poo-poo humor awkwardly sandwiched into it.

  • Glenn

Aw, c’mon. It’s hilarious. We have to learn to laugh at those things dear to our Apple-shaped hearts. It was more about Ellen’s inability to use it than it was the phone itself. Lighten up on the adjectives and big descriptive words and take it for what it’s worth…a good self-deprecating laugh.

Wow, Apple are such douchebags. Funny or not, Apple is getting ridiculous. I love my Macs and iPhone, but they are starting to take things too far. Love their products, dislike them as a company.

I wish Ellen would have continued the iPhone jokes instead of apologizing. What’s the difference in her making a joke about the use of the iPhone and a reviewing saying the iPhone is difficult to use. Maybe because Apple has no sense of humor unless they are the ones poking fun at another companies product.

Thank you. Finally, someone with the balls to call it as they see it. Ellen’s parody was COM-PLEEEEETLY lame. Embarrassing, in fact. There was so much more room there for some truly witty biting satire.

In regards to Apple, lame on their part also. I saw the commercial as poking fun at the user and not the phone itself. We all have relatives that fumble through cell phones and electronic gadgets that we find incredibly easy. To me, that’s what the “funny” was trying to be about.

And Apple should have shut up. The parody ad and all of its lameness would have been forgotten by the next day. Now, they have ensured it going viral.

A final note. I did appreciate Ellen’s “apology”. It was obvious that she didn’t give much merit to Apple’s concerns. You could see the “this is ridiculous” in her demeanor.

    But dude… fart jokes? Seriously???

  • Clown

Why so presumptuous? It could have been hate mail, or a hundred other things.

  • Clown

Ok that was a far-fetched example, but the point is, we do not know any details. I’m not defending Apple, because I too don’t have any details, but presumption irritates me.

  • http://ihbs.co.uk Ben

For those saying Apple is lame for ‘going after this’, note how the article explains that 1 person at Apple was offended, and that no official statement of any sort was made. Hell, Ellen could have realised the lameness of the bit herself, and then decided to apologise, rather than being told or forced to do anything

“Get over yourself. It was clean comedy and worth a few laughs. And this said from an Apple fan since the ’80s. Apple goes too far sometimes.”

    LOL

Worth a few laughs? But… but… It wasn’t funny! First of all the ‘truth’ on which comedy should be based doesn’t exist – the iPhone isn’t hard to use.

There is no second of all, actually.

I agree that Apple’s response was bizarre in the extreme. Did they feel that their reputation was being significantly and irrevocably sullied somehow?!

Wow, people are actually defending Apple’s bullshit behavior here? Cult of Mac indeed.

  • http://facebook.com/tlopezjr Thomas Lopez Jr.

    It was funny.

  • The Grump

The apology was just an excuse to run the joke a secound time. Geez buy a clue.

  • AOL

.. or it’s all a joke because Ellen is a comedian? What if she’s joking that Apple called? Have there been any number of parodies of Apple gear in the past? Has Apple called for an apology about those parodies?

  • KOAS

Doesn’t matter if it’s rubbish, Apple should be able to take a joke (even a bad one).

I thought it was really quite funny …

  • me

OMG, the gag was “hilarious” heh…but then Apple’s reaction was a bit too hard.

  • http://nerdvittles.com NerdUno

There’s someone that’s “lame and unfunny” but it’s not Ellen!

  • grammy geek

I love Ellen. I love all things Apple. The original commercial…eh. The commercial along with the apology. Very funny. Everyone down at the iHop thinks so too.

  • scalpod

It’s called self-deprecating humor you soulless twatwaffles. Whether you find it funny or not it wasn’t so much suggesting the iPhone is difficult to use as much as Ellen is stupid and can’t figure it out. In case you hadn’t noticed, her entire career was built on this kind of comedy and brainless Apple cultists and Steve Jobs need to get over themselves.

  • Darcy McGee

    > puckering up and birthing the thin stream of odorless fart

You, sir, are a class act.

(Be sure to consult the use of “Sarcasm” as humour if you read that.)

  • Windsor Smith

John! Such language! Makes me wonder if you might be even more thin-skinned than Apple.

  • Nonsense

Very funny. I should make more visits to this site. :)
I like Apple products (not the company), I have iPhone and Macs (and love them), and I liked the joke.
And already sent it to friends.

    Guys, sometimes you suck.

    Bye!
