Samsung’s new Galaxy S7 edge isn’t officially out until later this week, but according to some early out-of-the-box speed test comparisons it’s doesn’t fare too well against the six-month-old iPhone 6s Plus — despite having twice the RAM of Apple’s 2GB handset.

Check out the video below:

The S7 edge also faces off against Motorola’s Moto X Pure Edition and Google’s Nexus 6P in the video, both of which were also released last year. All four of the handsets are factory reset, functioning without network SIMs, and have only the extra apps (including the likes of Instagram and Temple Run) involved with the speed test installed — with the goal being to run through an opening and closing of each app in turn in the shortest possible time.

In the end, Apple’s A9-powered iPhone 6s Plus powers ahead of the competition, with the S7 edge finishes a massive 18 seconds behind.

To be fair to Samsung, it’s not a straightforward comparison. The Moto X Pure Edition, Nexus 6P, and the Galaxy S7 edge are all rendering at 1440p display, compared to the 1080p display on the iPhone 6s Plus — which means they’re pushing a whole lot more pixels around than Apple’s handset is. It’s also possible to change animation and transition times on several of the handsets, which could conceivably shave a bit of time off.

Still, it does demonstrate the efficiency with which Apple hardware and software work together. And showcases once again that on-paper specs are only one part of the bigger story.
