Apple: 1M iPads Sold – Breaks iPhone Record
One million iPads have sold in under 30 days, Apple announced Monday. It took twice as long for the iPhone to reach the same figure.
“One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with the iPhone,” CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement. Demand for the tablet device continues to outstrip supply, but the Cupertino, Calif. company is “working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers,” Jobs added.
Apple also announced 12 million apps have been downloaded by iPad users from the App Store with 5,000 apps written specifically for the tablet device. More than 1.5 million e-books from the iBookstore have been downloaded, according to the consumer electronics giant.
The company has released a running tally of iPad sales, starting with 300,000 iPads sold on April 3, the first day the device was available to consumers. Less than a week later, more than 500,000 iPads were sold in the U.S. Demand was so strong, the firm announced it would delay international sales until later this month.
Jobs mentioned Apple was working full-steam to try to meet demand, a sentiment echoed earlier by Tim Cook, the company’s COO, who told analysts last week sales “far exceeded” expectation. To buttress that point, 49 of 50 U.S. store surveyed reported being out of the new W-Fi and 3G iPad, one analyst reported Monday. Many of the retailers were also out of the Wi-Fi-only iPad, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster added.
