Android users have been jumping ship to iPhone 6s at an unprecedented rate, but as per a new report, Apple is being pressured to create a tool that would make it simpler for former iOS users to transfer their data from iPhone to their new Android device.
The pressure is allegedly coming from the European mobile operators, who are concerned that one reason users are hesitant about switching platforms is because of the difficulty in exporting data.
There’s no release date being mentioned, but this isn’t entirely without precedent. In September 2015, Apple launched its first Android app to help users “Move to iOS” — prompting an immediate backlash from angry Android users. The proposed new app would presumably work much the same way, only in reverse.
Apple has taken steps to help ex-Apple Android switchers in the past. Most notably, after a controversy about disappearing iMessages for people who have jumped to Android, Apple set up a Deregister iMessage page to let users deactivate the proprietary iMessaging service so that they are able to fully receive text messages on their new Android phones.
The European Commission previously opened a preliminary investigation into Apple’s contracts with European telecoms operators in 2013, although it never turned into a full investigation.
