Apple is allegedly using its secretive new lab facilities in Taiwan to develop microLED displays which are thinner and more energy-efficient than the displays currently used in the company’s products, a new report states.
Unlike traditional LCD displays, microLED displays don’t require backlighting, while also offering an increased color range and higher resolution graphics. Unfortunately, the technology has a low yield rate, which so far has limited the mass production possibilities that Apple would require.
This isn’t the first time Apple has investigated microLEDs. Last year, the company acquired LuxVue Technology, a small California-based company specializing in, “microLED-based displays for consumer electronics applications.”
Interestingly, much has been written about the possibility of microLEDs disrupting the growing trend of using OLEDs for displays. With Apple already using OLEDs for the Apple Watch, and reports that it could adopt the technology for iPhone displays as early as 2017, I’m intrigued to see where this microLED investigation goes.
