Apple to take GPU design into its own hands

Apple is reportedly working to create its own mobile GPU, a new report claims.

The report suggests that Apple has been working for several years to create an in-house graphics chip, using its chip design talent — shown previously when the company announced its first Apple-developed ARM-based CPU cores.

By building its own graphics chips, Apple would have a definite advantage in the phone and tablet market, which could conceivably give it even larger profit margins, provided it is able to build the chips to its own specification standards.

This isn’t necessarily easy, however. Samsung has tried to build a mobile GPU for more than half a decade, and so far has been unsuccessful.

Currently Apple uses various PowerVR graphics chips developed by Imagination Technologies, which it would be able to part ways with if it could build its own GPU.

While I wouldn’t expect an Apple in-house GPU to be here by iPhone 7 time, it’s interesting to note just how much of the manufacturing process the company is looking to bring under its own roof.
