Wi-Fi Sync: Wireless Sync Coming To The App Store

In an age when voice and video from half a world away can be sucked up from the soup of electromagnetic radiation invisibly swirling around us, plugging in my iPhone to sync with iTunes makes me feel like a caveman. I’ve been waiting for an app that would allow me to wirelessly sync my iDevices for awhile, and now, it looks like it might be here: Wi-Fi Sync by Greg Hughes allows you to pair your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your computer through WiFi, no wires required.

There’s drawbacks, of course: 802.11g WiFi’s a lot slower than USB 2.0, so expect syncs to take a longer time. But the point here is iterative syncing: instead of waiting days to sync your data, you sync more regularly, and only break out the USB cable when you need to charge or sync large volumes of data.

Hughes says that Wi-Fi Sync should be on the App Store soon, which is being met with a lot of skepticism, but I don’t see why Apple wouldn’t let it on as long as it doesn’t use private APIs. Even if it doesn’t make the App Store, though, I expect we’ll see it on Cydia soon enough… and Apple themselves can’t stick with USB 2.0 forever. If a future iPhone can charge inductively (like the Pre) and gets a radio upgrade to an 802.11n WiFi (like the iPad), we might finally be able to escape the ubiquitous USB umbilical in our Apple handsets once and for all.
