Oooooh, take a look at this. Above you see a screenshot of MidiPad, a software controller for software sequencer Ableton that’s “coming soon” for iPad.

And here’s the hardware device it directly competes with:

This is the Launchpad, a dedicated hardware controller designed from the outset for use with Ableton.

Now take a look at this video of MidiPad in action:

The makers of MidiPad say its wireless connection to your computer is one of its best features. But owners of real Launchpad controllers might argue that having actual physical buttons to press is a bigger plus.

There’s no word yet on how much MidiPad will cost, but I’m willing to bet it’ll be somewhat lower than the Launchpad’s $200 price tag.

This competes with the cult-favorite Monome controller as well (which runs upwards of $1000+ and very hard to even obtain to begin with).

Just to add to my last comment… This is the first time I’ve actually *seen* MidiPad and I can already tell you its going to completely change the electronic music scene. So many possibilities. I wonder if you can use it to control Logic (like most Midi sequencers) or if it is strictly for use with Ableton.

Connor: according to the info page, it will do Logic (and other apps) too.

The wireless connectivity is convenient, but the lag will be too high to use it in the same way as a hardwired controller. Looks cool though!

Looks cool but basically I cant see it replacing a LaunchPad, the LaunchPad’s big points against this are the fact that its connected via USB which is really important. WiFi is not reliable enough. and also the big thing with any DJ gear is that there is no tactile feedback with an iPad. You cant look at the computer screen and hit a cue without looking, well not very easily anyway. and also it means you cant rest your hands on it whilst waiting for a cue point. I’m not dissing the MidiPad app, I’m just saying that I cant see it becoming the norm for pro’s playing sets night after night.

  • Yep

    Apparently there’s no lag

  • Mmmm

    Dont you need Live 8 ($400) + Maxforlive($300) +IPAD($500) + MIDIPAD ($xx)
    …. um that’s over a $1000

Launchpad is $200 ALL in! M

I look forward to this. For now I use Livecontrol (free desktop software) + TouchOSC for iPad. Takes a small amount of setup, but it’s working and available now. This week it introduced drum pads!

Lag seems to be no problem.
