Microsoft gave fans a glimpse of the future of gaming on HoloLens today with a demo of a new game under development called Project X Ray that lets you fight alien robots in your living room.

It’s kind of like the X-Men’s Danger Room, projecting holographic bad guys all over your walls, couch, and ceiling while you fight them off with a holographic laser-blasting gauntlet. It looks absolutely insane, and best of all it’s tether free: no wires, no cords, no connection to a PC required.

While Oculus wants to immerse users in virtual worlds, Microsoft envisions a different future that mixes reality with virtual holographic projections. HoloLens has already shown some other gaming demos for Minecraft, as well as more technical applications for doctors and students.

Project X Ray is the first HoloLens demo that’s really wow’d me though. The robots are are so mart they can sense where your furniture and walls are to launch offensive schemes. You can dodge behind your couch, bash hologram robots together, and or just run away scared, making the experience truly unbelievable.
