Although some questioned Apple’s decision to support HTML 5 over the dominant Flash technology used in so many online ads and graphics, it appears CEO Steve Jobs may have the last laugh. A video platform company Monday announced it will convert Flash videos to HTML 5 for such publishing heavyweights as the New York Times and Time magazine.

As a result, we may see the two when Apple unleashes the iPad on April 3.

“The Brightcove Experience for HTML5 fills the gap between the current playback capabilities of the emerging standard and what our customers need to operate successful online video businesses,” the Cambridge, Mass. company said in a statement.

The company said it will be able to convert Flash videos to HTML5 format on the fly, allowing some Web sites to appear on the iPad sooner than expected. Both the Wall Street Journal and NPR recently announced they would create Web sites that were Flash-free, at least for the main page. That could change due to both media companies being Brightcove customers.

In addition, CBS has also said it would begin testing HTML5 as an alternative to Flash. In early 2010, video-sharing site YouTube announced it would also support the HTM5 support.

In January, Apple’s Jobs described Flash as ‘too buggy’ for the iPad, describing the video format as a “CPU hog.”

Ironically, Brightcove’s founder and CEO, Jeremy Allaire, also founded ColdFusion, a company acquired by Macromedia in 2001. Allaire reportedly created the Flash platform while CTO at Macromedia, before leaving in 2004 to found Brightcove.
