Funny True Story: Woman Pinned To Floor Under Heavy Mac Pro

Mac_Pro

Someone just forwarded me this hilarious story about a woman who was pinned to the floor by her Mac Pro.

The Mac Pro is a big, heavy machine and can weigh upwards of 40 lbs. The story circulated on an Apple consultant mailing list recently. Here it is, typos and all:

This is by far one of the funniest tech calls that I have ever recieved. One of my clients called this morning to say she is trapped under her MacPro tower and she needed me to come asap to help her out. I asked “where are you?” and she said “at home not at the studio”. She screamed “just get here!”. So I rushed over there, punched in the key code to get through the gate and entered her house calling out her name. I found her laying flat on her back on the staircase with the MacPro crushing her chest. I ran up there to pull the tower off her and I couldn’t help but to laugh. You see she is this small 4 foot 6 inches middle aged tiny lady. She just didn’t have the strenght to push the tower off. She had this idea to move the tower upstairs but because the tower was so heavy for her, she thought she could pull the tower while laying flat on her back over her body. Crawling the machine slowly up the stairs. It didn’t work. Helped her move the tower upstairs but the tower ended back down stairs anyway. It was just too funny.

So there you have it. Pro tip: Don’t move heavy machines around by putting them on your body and crawling across the floor.

Why did she not call 911???

@Viktor. Dunno. Good point. Too embarrassed probably? Easier to call a friend than a bunch of strangers.

The story doesn’t pass the sniff test for me.
Why believe a completely unconfirmed tale?
It would be hard to balance this on one’s chest, much less get pinned under it.
I hate to use the word “stupid”, but anyone who believes this sort of thing without any corroboration/confirmation is.
    Oh, wait a minute…there’s Elvis again…gotta go…

It IS true, I’m on the list that is mentioned. And she didn’t call a friend, or waste the resources of 911. She finally called the person she should have called in the first place, her Mac consultant.

    It’s not true.

While a Mac Pro is certainly heavy, it’s not a refrigerator. Anyone who has the strength to move it to the stairs and place it on top of their body in the first place would be able to at least push it to one side to put half of the weight on the ground (or stairs in this case), and get free.

I’d consider that quite possible. Anyone with a health condition can suffer a dizzy spell, cramp, fainting, breathing impediment after an strenuous activity and end up like that. Add the fact anyone would be wary of just ‘pushing aside’ a $2K-plus, delicate machine and let it tumble down some steps.

I pulled some back muscles years ago while lugging a couple Quicksilver G4s from a client’s studio to a shoot in a private home with some steep stairs. Macs can be heavy.

There are so many real stories out there that you don’t need to make fakes.

When I was a bank teller a man wearing a suit that was more than my salary, did not know how he needed to use a check to get cash out of his own account. He was using a deposit slip.

I have actually heard, “My scanner doesn’t work. I put the paper up to the computer screen…”

I have even heard, “What is the code that you type into the computer to stop it from smoking.”

When I look at the stupid things that I have done in my life I just laugh at these stories. I try not to be judgmental.
