Tech Site Recommends 7-Year-Old IE5 Download

Soft Sailor is a tech blog I’ve not encountered before, but today I stumbled across a very odd post indeed. Published just yesterday, it recommends downloading something a little bit unusual: Internet Explorer 5.2.3.

Which is only, let’s see now… about seven years old.

The author Dragos Pirvu writes:

“Although it’s not that popular on Mac computers, Internet Explorer is also available on Apple’s Mac OS X platform and it’s doing a fairly good job.”

And what’s more:

“Although it does have some security leaks, some Mac OS X developers are still using Internet Explorer to create CSS files and others.”

DON'T MISS
Firefox 4 For Mac Now Available For Download

So that’s it. While the rest of us have needlessly upgraded to all this new-fangled stuff like Safari and Firefox, it’s the CSS devs who have faithfully – yet secretively – kept IE5 alive as a CSS editor. Who knew?

That site loses ALL credibility for that. Unreal.

A Tech blog recommending a piece of software seven years old.

Clearly they aint very good at their job, or do not know their stuff. Even Microsoft is advising people to upgrade from IE 6 due to major security leaks, and they are recommending version five??

Granted, thats the only and latest version of internet explorer for the Mac, but why the hell would they recommend something that old, that buggy and that vulnerable in the first place? Why not recommend Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc?

Lol. Yes that is what i would use over the myriad other options. It’s just too bad you cant write css with a simple text editor. Well off to download ie5!

…clean interface on that browser. Looks promising!

    What a joke.

I downloaded it just for the fun of it. Wow, it just proved to show how good modern browsers are. Twitter took about 8 or 9 times longer to load than on Chrome, and when it did, it didn’t actually work…

Ha Ha – must be some weird site from Asia.

Back in the day – I did use and like IE for OS X. But that was then. Does it even run on Leopard? I doubt it, but I won’t volunteer to test it, gotta make toast, instead.

IE5 for Mac was actually quite a bit more advanced than IE6 in it’s support for web standards. That’s not really much of a compliment seeing as IE6 is the scourge of web developers everywhere.

    Yup, credibility gone.

It’s right up there with CrankyGeeks.com having broken links, dead end, half-page loads, and blaming it on complicated website technical issues.

If you’re a tech site – you’re kinda’ expected to live up to some basics. 7 year old software (especially IE) is embarrassingly goofy to recommend.

    Is it April 1st?

  • Michael

Microsoft themselves recommended Safari when they decided to stop updating IE for the Mac.

Maybe the blog ran out of stuff to talk about and looped around?

I suppose it’s a mistake because the IE5 is really Outdated and it has a lot of security problems. If you need a good browser for Mac you must choose the default Apple browser. Usually Softsailor.com it’s a good review website but with this article it has a not very good job.
