Your iPhone makes a compelling case to never buy another camera. But Sony seems to understand that the better you get with your photography, the more you will learn that the camera in a smartphone has limitations.

So when you are ready to try a more sophisticated tool, Sony will be waiting with its new RX100 IV.

Don’t let the size, weight and look fool you into thinking this is just another point-and-shoot. Some of the specs in this tiny box rival those of a professional-grade DSLR.

Sony has been making waves in the photography industry for quite some time and huge ripples went out this week when it unveiled three new cameras, including the RX100 IV.

The camera has a new 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor that captures 20-megapixel still photos at shutter speeds as high as 1/32,000 of a second. Sony promises high performance and picture quality in low light with an ISO sensitivity range of 125 to 25,600.

Switch it to record video and the RX100 IV provides 4K video at 1,000 frames per second. Or, you could slow things down by recording 40x slow motion.

The RX100 IV features a pop-up electronic viewfinders, a 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom lens with image stabilization, a burst rate of 16 frames per second and a three-inch LCD monitor that tilts for selfies.

It is also equipped with Wi-Fi and its easy-to-use menu includes a series of picture effects, from toy camera and other retro settings to monochrome, soft focus and watercolor.

Thin, palm-sized and pocket-ready, the Sony RX100 IV will cost about $1,000 when it hits stores next month.
