A game which asks you to literally throw your iPhone in the air to make it perform extreme sport-style tricks sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Nonetheless, that’s the concept behind Gyro Skate, a new $1.99 iOS title that aims to replicate the skateboarding experience by asking gamers to perform stunts like the 360 flip by physically rotating your iPhone.

There are 32 real skateboard tricks in total, divided up into four different difficulty levels, alongside a “free ride” mode that lets you experiment your yourself. If you don’t know your Varial Kickflip from your 720 Laser Double Heelflip, there’s additionally a detailed “how-to” animation for each one, which will guide you through the process.

Most nifty of all, however, is the fact that the game works if you do actually go the next step and mod your physical skateboard to embed your iPhone in it. While there is obviously plenty that can go wrong in this case, videos like the above definitely tempt us to break out the appropriate tools for some training to become the next Tony Hawk.

Maybe not on concrete, of course.
