I still think it’s a mini miracle that Rockstar Games managed to compress the gang-banging goodness of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas onto a device thinner than a deck of cards and capable of fitting in my pocket.
That’s exactly what happened last year, however, and courtesy of a new update, the game’s remastered, high-resolution graphics now look pristine on your brand new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus thanks to the addition of native-resolution support for Apple’s next-gen handsets.
Put simply, the game looks mind-bendingly great on the iPhone 6. Despite originally being released on the now-historical artifact that was the PlayStation 2, GTA: San Andreas received an impressive spit polish for its iOS port, with newer devices seeing the most improvements — including enhanced lighting effects, dynamically detailed shadows and real-time environmental reflections.
You can read my original iOS review of the game here, but if you’re even faintly attracted to the open-world concept that is Grand Theft Auto, this should be an automatic download. At only $3.99 it is, appropriately enough, a steal. Apple certainly appears to agree, since the game currently holds its “Editor’s Choice” award in the App Store.
The new update also sorts out some bugs — including an issue some users experienced with the mission “The Da Nang Thang.”
