New images of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Alpha indicate it will be even thinner than Apple’s iPhone 5s. The handset’s rear-facing camera protrudes out of its back somewhat — just like the Galaxy S5’s — but overall, the device could well be the slimmest Samsung smartphone to date.
Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s measure just 7.6mm thick — 0.5mm thinner than the Galaxy S5. In the image above, however, the Galaxy Alpha is clearly even thinner. The device will be substantially wider and taller than the iPhone, though, with rumors claiming it will have a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display.
I mentioned in yesterday’s story covering other Galaxy Alpha images that the device shares many similarities with the iPhone, and those are even more evident in these pictures. Not only is its chamfered aluminum frame almost identical, but it also has a familiar speaker grille drilled into its bottom edge and antennas embedded within it.
The Galaxy Alpha will have a dotted plastic back much like the Galaxy S5’s, however, which is expected to be removable — providing access to the battery and a microSD card slot. It’s currently unclear whether this device will be water-resistant, but it is likely to have other flagship features, including a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate monitor.
Other specifications are said to include an eight-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera, and 32GB of internal storage.
Samsung has promised that a handset made from “new materials” will be available before the end of the year, so we expect the Galaxy Alpha to get its official unveiling in the coming months. Sources for SamMobile claim it could be unveiled as early as next week.
