While most of Square-Enix’s games for mobile tend to be ports of the developer’s past hits, it also occasionally releases original games too — often with spectacularly great results.

The latest of these games is set to Chaos Rings III, a sequel to 2012’s Chaos Rings II — coming to Android, iOS and PlayStation Vita this winter. Announced over the weekend on Famitsu, the game is set to arrive in Japan on October 16.

An RPG in the Final Fantasy mold, the sequel will likely contain the team-based combat, gene collecting, and other features fans of the series have come to expect. Newly released screenshots also show several new characters, alongside a battle scene and camp screen with room for a maximum of five characters.

The game’s set to be launched in Japanese originally, but as Touch Arcade points out, following the release pattern of other titles from Square-Enix, an English-language version shouldn’t be too far behind.

We’ll report back with more details as we hear them, but if it can live up to the high standards set by its predecessors, this premium RPG could well be one of the standout mobile games in a year that has already had an incredibly strong slate of titles.
