War gets serious in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

“One day I’ll remember,” says Bilbo Baggins. “Remember everything that happened. The good, the bad. Those who survived, and those who did not.”

Thus starts the latest trailer for the upcoming sequel to The Hobbit movies: The Battle of the Five Armies. Check it out below in all it’s glory.

The haunting melody (which sounds a lot like Pippin, actually, from The Lord of the Rings) that plays over all the images in the trailer surely tells us that this final installment in the series will be darker, elegiac, and full of meaning. We see the dragon Smaug laying waste to the town outside his lair, elves and dwarves dealing with the burned remains of friend and building, and a ton of that gorgeous New Zealand landscape that fills in for Middle Earth for all of these epic films.

This December, when the film appears in a theater near you, you’ll get to see Thorin Oakenshield choose war over peace in the battle for his kingdom. The massive armies of Sauron, along with Azog the Defiler facing off with Bilbo on yet another mountain top.

We’re looking forward to this ending chapter in Peter Jackson’s magnus opus that is the Lord of the Rings series. You’ll be able to see it on or after December 17, 2014, just in time for the holiday movie rush.
