A brilliant computer programmer living in a future dystopian totalitarian state must prove the Zero Theorem, in which 100 percent equals 0, or all is nothing. He’s got a touch of social anxiety (“We do not like to be touched!”), a seriously bald head, and a variety of future-weird outfits that he wears in each scene. Sound like fun?
If you’ve seen any of Terry Gilliam’s similar work, like 12 Monkeys or Brazil (or even if you just dig Apple’s similarly themed 1984-esque commercial by Ridley Scott) you’re going to want to check this one out. The gloriously wacky and edgy trailer is below.
As you can see, it’s pure Gilliam, with madcap, scene-chewing performances and themes of the meaning of our existence permeating every scene. You’ve got the requisite oblivious council, as in 12 Monkeys and the beautiful yet distracting female love interest (every movie ever) added atop a world that’s more insane than the protagonist themselves (Brazil).
The film stars Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained), with David Thewliss (Harry Potter, Dragonheart), Tilda Swinton (The Chronicles of Narnia), Matt Damon (Elysium) and French actress Mélanie Thierry turning in supporting performances. That’s a heck of a sci-fi pedigree, for sure.
It’s like Gilliam decided to bring his vision from his earlier flicks to the modern day – obviously we’re still dealing with massive and confusing bureaucracies and oblivious leaders even now. This looks to be a brilliant bit of sci-fi satire for the current information age, and I can’t wait to see the film when it releases to the US this summer.
