This week's top Apple rumors
Stare into our ball to see past the rumors and into the future...
We get slammed 24/7 with new Apple rumors. Some are accurate, most are not. To give you a clue about what’s really coming out of Cupertino in the future, we’re busting out our rumor debunker each week to blow up the nonsense.
After WWDC ground the rumor mill to a near halt last week, the Apple gossip machine is back to full force spitting out whispers of new iMacs, crazy tales of futuristic Smart Covers and of course, tons of new iPhone 6 rumors.
Once again we're taking the black cloth off our crystal ball and shining it up to see if we can spot what Tim Cook has in store for the future of Apple. Come see which rumors are guaranteed to materialize and which are about to disappear like a ghost.
Is the Smart Cover ready for an upgrade?
The Rumor: The Smart Cover is about to get a lot smarter.
The Verdict: Maybe. Based on a recently filed Apple patent, AppleInsider postulates that Cupertino could add illumination and communication elements to the Smart Cover by integrating LEDs into the case. Alerts for messages, low battery, and other apps could be dismissed by pressing physical buttons, but a Bluetooth-connected case sounds like it'd take away from the iPad's excellent all-day battery.
That big ass iPhone won't be cheap
The Rumor: The iPhablet is going to cost an extra $100.
The Verdict: You can bet on it. Apple won't bump the price on its 4.7-inch iPhone, but the massive 5.5-incher is going to come with a $100 premium. That's great news for Apple and according to Raymond James' analysts the public will be more than willing to slap down an extra C-note for a truckload of extra pixels. Let's hope Apple at least bumps up the base storage to 32GB while its busy taking our money.
The iPad Air 2 wants to be your favorite camera
The Rumor: The iPad Air 2 is getting an 8MP camera sensor.
The Verdict: Undoubtedly yes. We didn't need ETNews to tell us that the iPad Air will get a much better camera this year - Apple adds improved optics every year - but the Korean outlet reports that production has already begun on Apple's next tablets and they'll be exactly as thin and light as last year's model, which goes along with Apple's tradition of waiting every two year before making a major design change to its best selling tablet.
The wireless revolution?
The Rumor: Wireless charging and a faster 4G radio are coming to the iPhone 6.
The Verdict: I want to believe it, but can't. Not yet at least. The iPhone 6 could use selling points other than just a larger display. Wireless charging could be a major gain, but even though Starbucks just committed to installing 100,000 wireless chargers in its shops over the next three years, it's still not clear if wireless charging is ready to take off yet.
Venture Beat claims Cupertino has added inductive charging to the iPhone 6 as well as a faster 4G antenna, though what wireless standard it will use remains to be seen. 5G internet is still years away from hitting the U.S. so I'd love to see Apple make some huge battery improvements in the meantime, but I'd be much happier with a regular dumb battery than can last a full 24 hours, than a wireless battery that patters out after six.
