If you’re a fan of RPGs you’ll be instantly familiar with Square Enix’s superb series of Dragon Quest games. Among those games, the most famous is Dragon Quest VIII — a game which has sold 4.9 million units (and counting) worldwide since its launch in 2005.

Close to a decade after landing on video game consoles, an iOS port of Dragon Quest VIII was given a soft-launch in Japan five months ago, and now it’s available internationally via the App Store.

The first entry in the series to be presented in full 3D, the player takes on the role of Hero — joining a cast of characters that includes Yangus, a bandit with a heart of gold, Jessica, a high-born magical minx, and Angelo, knight and lothario. Together they journey through an incredibly detailed cel shaded world — resembling a living cartoon — engaging in open world exploration and scintillating turn-based combat.

Unlike many console games which make their way to mobile, Dragon Quest VIII hasn’t been dumbed-down for its tablet/smartphone debut, but has rather been given a slew of new features — including a streamlined touch-based control system, enhanced tension system, skill points, monster teams, hybridizing alchemy pot, as well as the return of the casino.

At $19.99 it’s definitely more expensive than your typical game for iOS, but fans of the series will be pleased to know that there are no additional in-app purchases whatsoever.

Dragon Quest VIII is compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPad and iPod touch devices running iOS 6.0 and upwards.
