Crystal Baller: ARM-based Macs and 5 other wacky Apple rumors

This week's top Apple rumors

Come see what will really be unveiled at WWDC and which rumors will go up in smoke.

iWatch will be unexpectedly round

The Rumor: iWatch will have a round face, rather than the rectangular flexible display that's been rumored for over a year.

The Verdict: Probably not. Analyst Brian Blair of Rosenblatt Securities swears the iWatch will look similar to the Moto 360 after he went on a trip to Taiwan just to find out what Apple's supply chain is prepping, but the round watch face goes against everything we've heard so far. Plus, Blair's track record for Apple rumors is practically nonexistent other than in 2011 when he said the iTV was going to be a 55-inch iMac. There's no reason to believe him yet.

An iMac everyone can afford

iOS in your living room

The Rumor: Apple will make a big play for the living room with a home automation API for iOS 8 with centralized controls for smart devices.

The Verdict: Kinda true. We've been clamoring for Apple to make the iHome a reality for a year but it looks like 'Made for iHome' won't be nearly as impressive or robust as the Financial Times rumor claims it will be.

iPhone 6 production is ramping up

The Rumor: The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will start production in July, but the 5.5-incher will wait until August.

The Verdict: Definitely yes. Even though the rumor comes from the unreliable Digitimes, Apple has to start producing the iPhone 6 en mass by late-July or early-August if it hopes to have enough on shelves for its regular fall launch. The production delays on the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will be frustrating for fanboys wanting their first phablet, but maybe the goodies in iOS 8 will keep them distracted long enough they won't notice.

Glowing Apple logos on iPhones?

The Rumor: The iPhone 6 will feature a glowing Apple logo on the back.

The Verdict: Please yes, but maybe it's a bad idea? This could be the first iPhone 6 rear shell spotted in the wild and it's the first rear shell to have a clear logo. Matching the iPhone's logo to the glowing MacBook logo would look awesome, until you go to a concert and 800 zealots thrust their pulsating Apple lights into the air to praise Jobs, or take a picture. It could get weird.

We get slammed 24/7 with new Apple rumors. Some are accurate, most are not. To give you a clue about what’s really coming out of Cupertino in the future, we’re busting out our rumor debunker each week to blow up the nonsense.

The iWatch if/when released will be round, the iPhone 6 logo will NOT glow, and a low-budget iMac makes about as much sense as the rumor last year of the 5c being a low-budget iPhone. Oh, and there never will be an iTV released from Apple, ever.

They MIGHT do what they did with Macbook Airs and shave $100 off.. but I wouldn’t call it ‘budget’.. just an incremental price drop..

Last time I checked, which was a couple months ago, on the surface iMac’s have a lower initial price, but when I priced out the exact same options that I got for my iMac (ordered in late 2012 with the 3TB fusion drive) it was actually more expensive by over $200.

So you might see a price reduction for iMacs if you just order the base model, but in reality, it might not actually be a price reduction because few people just get the bare bones.

What about if the glowing apple logo will function as a soft flash? And the the flash beside the camera will function as photo-/flashlight

Apple never sells to the bottom feeders. Those who do are commoditizing their products. Apple’s own products will never be commodities. They are always going to be high end products that generate lust to buy.

  • jameskatt

A glowing Apple logo will interfere with the camera by throwing off light that will change the light balance.

Nobody has said a word on this, but the aluminum shell for iPhone 6 has a ridiculous paint job (near top and bottom) that outlines where the antenna would be. I don’t understand why they don’t just leave it looking like the current iPod Touch and just leave it all aluminum. It’s a cheap freaking design compared to the iPhone 5S, why are they trying to put lipstick on a pig?

    • Demonstr8r

You do realize that this is a fake, right?

      • mahadragon

I’ve seen reports from sources that consistently get rumors right and those aluminum shells all look identical to this one.

      • Demonstr8r

Well, for one the iPod Touch does not have cellular, but again, let’s wait and see in September.
