iOS devs can finally offer promo codes for in-app purchases

Apple is finally giving iOS developers the opportunity to provide promotional codes for in-app purchases. EA will be one of the first to take advantage of the new scheme with a Real Racing 3 promotion that will allow players to redeem free in-game gold that would usually cost $1.99.

iOS developers have long been able to provide App Store redemption codes for their products, allowing them to give away free copies as part of competitions, promotions, or for review purposes. But until now, they haven’t been able to do the same for additional content or virtual goods that only available via in-app purchase.

If an iOS developer added ten new levels to their hit game, then, and asked players to pay $1.99 for them, there was no way to then give those levels away for free. They could either ask everyone to pay — including testers or competition winners — or make them free for all.

Fortunately, it seems Apple has now changed this, based on a new promotion from EA. The gaming giant is giving away free in-game gold worth $1.99 (U.S. only) for Real Racing 3 in an effort to promote “something big” that’s on its way to the popular racer. The company hasn’t revealed what that will be yet, but you may want to hang onto your free gold.

Presumably, Apple will give all developers the opportunity to take advantage of this, so we’ll likely see more promotions just like EA’s in the future.
