If you’re a fan of strategy simulation games, you’ll probably already know the Anno series, which arrived on PC back in the heady days of 1998 and has continued as a successful franchise since then.

Developers Ubisoft recently announced that they will be bringing an original entry to the series to iPad, later this year. Called Anno: Build an Empire, you’ll begin by colonizing an uninhabited island, which you then harvest for resources, eventually building your way up to fully-fledged civilization — with various colonized islands under your control, which you can trade between.

As Touch Arcade points out, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an Anno game arrive on iOS — since the previously released Dawn of Discovery – Harbor technically counts as a spinoff (or, more accurately, a spinoff of a spinoff.)

Still, this will be the first time a bonafide official installment of Anno proper will arrive on the iPad. With the series’ fan favorite status and reputation for deep gameplay, this should be a lot of fun — although it’s worth noting that this same optimism could have been applied to titles like RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile, which turned potential classics into freemium, in-app-purchase loaded nightmares.

Like building the kind of new world seen in Anno, let’s proceed optimistically, but also with caution.
